In a continual effort to convert the entire world to my musical tastes, I thought I’d share some songs I’ve been listening to on repeat this month. This doesn’t necessarily mean these songs debuted in March; it simply means that my ears have taken a liking to (read: become obsessed with) them in the past four weeks and thus these tracks have racked up play counts.
[Yes, this will be a monthly thing. Please contain your excitement.]
1. "Blame It On Me" // George Ezra
Imagine this: It’s the first day of warmth after a soul-numbing winter. The sun is out, your legs are finally free from the oppression of pants, trees are budding, the robins have returned and pooped all over your car after you inadvertently parked it under a tree for the night, and you’re driving with windows down and your favorite tune blasting. Okay, now let’s take it up a notch: You’re in Barcelona sitting aside the sparkling Mediterranean with the bluest sky you’ve ever seen, sipping a fruit-filled sangria that is straight-up life-changing.
This song is basically all of the above in sonic form. It’s literally (let me say it again: LITERALLY) impossible to listen to this and not feel a little bit happier, a little bit more hopeful that this world isn’t crumbling to pieces, a little bit more at peace that Coldplay’s next album could be their last.
In other words, this is your go-to song for a bleh day. And also a yay day. And also a neutral day. And also any day.
P.S. I denied myself a week of groceries (help me I’m poor) to purchase his album, Wanted for Voyage, after seeing this lovely British lad (note: NOT the 50 year-old bearded man I imagined him being) open for Hozier at the Ryman, and it was totally worth subsisting off pasta for a few days. I recommend you do the same. Aside from this song, album favorites include “Barcelona,” “Song 6,” and “Drawing Board.” Check ‘em out, plz & thx.
2. "Pay No Mind" // Madeon (feat. Passion Pit)
UGH I’M SO INTO THIS SONG IT’S UNREAL. It almost makes me a little mad just how into it I am, but in a good way.
Words I would use to describe this song: bubbly, intoxicating, everythingIwantinasong, youshouldlistentothisASAPorelse.
There's no going back after you listen to it. Go ahead, press play.
3. Lifted Up (1985)" // Passion Pit
Passion Pit twice in the same list? Yes.
When I first heard this song, I thought “Okay, yes, this is good.” Then I heard it again and my opinion changed to “WAIT HELP ME I’M DROWNING IN THE GREATNESS OF THIS SONG.”
April will be a good month for a number of reasons, namely because Passion Pit will be releasing their third studio album, Kindred, on the 21st. My how-pumped-are-you level is past measurement at this point. Gossamer is one of my favorite albums, so I’m impatiently awaiting this next one. Special note for the band: DON’T DISAPPOINT ME, YOU GUYS.
4. "So Far (It’s Alright)" // The 1975
By now you should just come to expect that I’ll always find a way to incorporate a 1975 song into everything I write because I’m 100% addicted to this band and their sound in every single way possible. I’ve probably (definitely) listened to them more in the past year than I have Coldplay, and that’s a rather frightening realization.
"So Far (It's Alright)" is on the extended edition of their album. It's all about how sweet Matty smokes too much and drinks too much and sits around doing too much of nothing, yet so far, it’s alright. Very positive subject matter!!!! But it’s catchy, and I’m obsessed with them, so here I am listening to it over and over and over and over and over again.
"Believe" // Mumford & Sons
The world’s reaction to this song: meh.
My reaction to this song: !!!!!!
I don’t really understand the disconnect between my affinity for Mumf’s latest single and everyone else’s un-affinity (not a word, but go with it) for the song. It’s almost irrational how much I dig it. The fact that the video is filmed in London could be a contributing factor, but regardless, this song makes me pumped for what’s to come. Mumford can at least assure themselves that one person (me) will be purchasing their new (electric – gasp!) album, Wilder Minds, come May 4th.
5. "Time" // Mikky Ekko
Mikky Ekko’s album (also titled Time) has accompanied me during many evenings of blog work for That First Year and what a lovely companion it’s been. By far my favorite track from the album is “Time” because can you say CATCHY or WUT. His voice is like this crock-pot taco soup recipe I recently made: really, really good. In fact, I’m listening to “Time” right now and yeah, maybe I did just press play on it for a fourth time. Do me and you and Mikky and society all a favor and give it a listen.
